Manager’s Corner

Priscilla

Dear Residents,

I never thought I would be so happy to say goodbye to 2020. I truly hope things will greatly improve in 2021, especially when it comes to kindness to one another. My focus this year is to be kinder and to spread that kindness all around me. Try it, you will be surprised how good you will feel. Service above self!

Additionally, I want to take a moment to give my sincere thanks to the outgoing Board members of the FHAOI.

First, to Bill Butler. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work as President of the FHAOI. You worked hard to get business done the right way, to investigate all the resident concerns, and to build a great working relationship. Well done my friend, I will miss you.

Secondly, thank you, Judy Michalski. What can I say but my deepest thank you? Judy has been an important part of the FHAOI for as many years that I have been here at Fairways and most recently as Vice President. She has a vast knowledge of the bi-laws and how to get things done. Judy has helped all those around her and is always willing to lend a hand. Thank you and I will miss you!

Lastly, we say goodbye to Mike Scanlon, Director of Activities. Thank you, Mike, for all your hard work. You worked very hard to bring entertainment to the residents of Fairways and that is not an easy task. Each year the residents enjoyed a fabulous New Year’s Eve party, Fourth of July celebrations, and many more fun events and entertainers. Thank you for your service to Fairways.

Sincerely,
Priscilla

Take your taste buds to New Orleans through Cajun seasonings, a delicious blend of spices, perfect for flavoring chicken and seafood and adding into main dishes like jambalaya and gumbo. Not to mention, it’s a great way to spice up classics like deviled eggs or potatoes. Which of these fun dishes are you going to try first?

Sales Update

Bag of money graphic

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year! We are glad to have 2020 behind us and hope everyone is staying healthy and safe.

We always love this time of year at the Fairways Country Club because the weather is amazing! Our golfers are out enjoying our beautiful course, making friendships and having a great time (safely of course)!

As you may have noticed, we have been very successful this past year in home resales. After running data in October, Hometown sales agents have outsold all competition this year 2 to 1 and our average home resale price is twice the average of our competitors. This means that your home values are affected positively by us!

You will be noticing some new homes coming in as well! We are excited to bring some new floorplans to The Fairways Country Club. Reviews have been positive on the floorplans that have already arrived and new construction helps maintain the value of your home and community. If you would like to tour new homes, be on the lookout for COVID-friendly Open House events as it’s a great opportunity to check out the new homes!

Keep up with our website for more information on our available homes for sale.

If you have any questions, please give us a call!

Best Regards,
Judith Stebbins and Madeline Sanchez

Upcoming Events

Closeup of calendar

As the weather gets warmer, we are looking forward to continuing our outdoor events. We are already planning a Memorial Day pool party complete with hotdogs, hamburgers, and fun games. If there are other ideas, we welcome any suggestions and we always need volunteers to help. How about an Olympic event? We did this a few years back and it was great fun. We also compete with other Hometown communities in golf, bocce, and shuffleboard and, if we remember correctly, Fairways took gold in two out of the three events. If you are interested in this event or any others, please reach out to our community office and thank you for continuing to make the Fairways a great place to live!

Do you like Cuban food? If so, then head over to The Old Cuban Café at 12014 E, Colonial Drive or their other location 1672 N. Goldenrod Road. I absolutely love it here! The food is delicious and very popular with many in our area. Anything you order is full of flavor and I recommend you give it a try. They serve fried fish, meat, shrimp, rice, beans, yellow sweet plantains and don’t forget the yummy desserts and Cuban coffees. Need I say more? You also enjoy Cuban music in the background while enjoying your food. The environment is lively and fun. Give them a try! You won’t regret it.

Resident Spotlight

Resident spotlight winners

Congratulations to our residents in the spotlight this month – Curt and Shelly Mottram, who have been members of our community since 2017 when they first relocated from Winter Park, FL.

In the three short years they have lived in our community, they have shown an unflattering willingness to help their fellow neighbors, spearheading the movement, “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”. This movement helps provide food and holiday meals to those in need in our community, along with home services and a warm smile.

The Mottram’s are also involved with a group that have brought numerous food trucks to our community. These monthly food trucks have been the highlight for residents during the isolated months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To add more fun, they’ve recently helped us feel the Holiday Spirit in December 2020 with their very own Elf of the Shelf. This elf first appeared at the Welcome Center and was later seen on the golf course walking his dog. Thank you, Curt and Shelly, for bringing so much fun to the Fairways!

Resident Appreciation

Happy Resident Appreciation Month! To show our love for all of our fantastic residents, we are planning some special events and goodies for everyone through the month of February.

During the week of February 17, our staff will be delivering a goodie bag to each and every one of our residents, lovingly made by our staff and filled with fun treats! Fairways team members will be wearing masks and gloves and leaving your treat on your front steps, so be on the lookout for a knock on your door during this week.

On February 24, Hometown America will be bringing an Ice Cream truck vendor to the Masters parking lot to serve up some sweet treats and smiles. Each resident will receive a soft serve ice cream cup or cone and masks will be required until you receive your ice cream and are 6 feet away from your neighbors as social distancing will be practiced.

We hope you all have a great month and thank you for continuing to call The Fairways your home!

Create Your Own Zen

Create Your Own Zen

Looking for a way to relax and get-in-touch with nature without doing difficult yard work? Try your hand at a DIY mini Zen Garden! Sand, stones, and some small plants are all you need to start your journey to mindfulness and tranquility.

First, let’s look at where Zen Gardens originated. While there have been many versions of them throughout the centuries, the one you’ll most likely recognize is from Buddhist Zen Monks in the Muromachi Period. After anxieties regarding civil wars during the Heian period, people wanted gardens that reflected the Buddhist beliefs of the never-ending cycle of life after death. The always altering state of the Zen Gardens reflect life as the Buddhists know, and it brought them peace.

Interested to see if your own Zen Garden will bring you tranquility like the monks? Here are a few tips get you started:

  • Use calming elements such as black and white sand, smooth stones, and small plants, but feel free to customize and add your own flares, such as essential oils, as well!
  • Use a container to match your style. Wood boxes are more natural, while glass adds an elegant flare.
  • Don’t forget your mini rake! Raking the sand is a great way to release stress and start your journey to finding Zen.

We hope creating your Zen Garden gives you not only a new, creative hobby, but also one that brings you some inner peace.

Recreate Your Childhood

Recreate Your Childhood

Trying new recipes is always fun, but sometimes, nothing can satisfy your craving for a classic, home-cooked meal that brings back all the nostalgia of childhood. If you’re in need of some inspiration, or are maybe just curious to compare your own family recipes with someone else’s, read on!

Recreate Your Childhood

Recreate Your Childhood

While there are some recipes we can happily leave in the past (looking at you, meat jelly), there are many classic recipes that we would love to see make a comeback. Trying new recipes is always fun, but sometimes nothing can satisfy your craving for a classic, home-cooked meal that brings back all the nostalgia of childhood. Whether you’re looking for some inspiration or are simply curious to compare your family recipes with someone else’s, we have some ideas for you.

A throwback appetizer that is sure to be a hit at your next potluck are Slow Cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs - they’re sweet, tangy, simple, and delicious. If you’re looking for something to feed the whole family, try Tuna Casserole or Beef Stroganoff. They both have a hearty egg noodle base and are great served fresh and as leftovers. For dessert, try an elegant Baked Alaska. With a mouth-watering pound cake on the bottom and a fluffy meringue top, your guests are sure to be impressed by this unique dish.

Have you tried any of these recipes, or will you be trying any? Whether you’ll be recreating them or not, we hope we brought back some childhood nostalgia for you with these blasts from the past.

Black History Month

Black History Month

February marks the 45th anniversary of Black History Month, first celebrated in 1926 as a way to raise awareness of Black American’s contributions to history and later became a month-long celebration in 1976. Keep reading to learn more about the history of this month.

Black History Month

Black History Month

In 1926 Dr. Carter G. Woodson instituted the first week-long celebration to raise awareness of African Americans’ contributions to history. Prior to this time, little information could be found regarding African American history. Important achievements were left out of history books, and there was a general misconception that African Americans had made little contribution to U.S. society or history. 50 years later, the week became a month, and today February is celebrated as African American History Month. The month of February was chosen because it celebrates the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both of whom dramatically affected the lives of African Americans. Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was a writer, lecturer, editor, and civil rights activist who escaped slavery at age 21 and went on to campaign for the abolition of slavery, establish a newspaper, and hold the office of Minister to Haiti. He was a major voice in the anti-slavery/civil rights movement of his time. Abraham Lincoln (born February 12, 1809), as the sixteenth president of the United States, issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, thereby declaring that all slaves within the Confederacy would be permanently free. Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded by Dr. Woodson, sets the theme for the month.
