As the temperature rises, so does the fun at the Fairways. This time of year is special to us because of all the outdoor events we can enjoy in the Sunshine State.

Speaking of fun activities, I hope all our residents enjoyed the Memorial Day cookout at the Westchester pool and the monthly wine and cheese events. Thank you, Hometown America, for providing so many great ways to meet our neighbors, share delicious food, and tell our best stories. We have a new resident who attended the latest wine and cheese party and wound up talking to another couple from her hometown. We love to see old friendships thrive and new friendships blossom.

Summer is historically our busy selling time here at the Fairways and our sales team is off to a great start; they are on fire selling brokered homes. Capital Updates

2019 has been a year of refresh and renewal in our community and that shows no signs of slowing down. Recent improvements include the new fountain near the front entrance, re-roofing the Masters clubhouse, and installing a new A/C at the clubhouse. Thank you for your patience during these projects.

Of course, we didn’t stop there. What do you think of the lighting upgrade at the Masters Clubhouse? We installed high voltage lights in the Masters parking area and in front of the laundry room, ensuring everything in the area is now properly illuminated.

We also just completed the renovation of the Greenbrier pool and spa. Gone is the 80s style baby blue tile. Our Greenbrier pool and spa now has a new pool finish along with a modern turquoise tile and new depth markers. Perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day!

That’s not all scheduled at the Greenbrier. You asked, we listened. We are installing new automatic doors at the Greenbrier as well. Now you will have a ramp leading to the building and doors that will open automatically while your hands are full of library books or your crafting materials.

Thank you, Hometown, for all these great improvements to our community and the place we love to call home.

Summer is here again at The Fairways Country Club! Sales have been consistently strong through the winter and spring, and your Hometown Sales Agents have continued to sell right in line with appraisals, keeping your home values up.

Activities Corner

As our snowbirds fly back to their summer homes, the fun shows no signs of slowing down for our year-round residents.

Our wine and cheese night has become a popular event every month for the residents to come and visit with friends as well as make new ones. This is now a regular event, so please continue to check your calendars for future dates. Also, don’t forget our other recurring event, Movie Night! Hometown hosts a movie night each month for residents with snacks, soda, and an occasional ice cream social.

The March dance with “Robin and the Retro’s” was a roaring success. Many of our residents came dressed up in their best retro clothing to enjoy the band and dance the night away.

In April, we hosted a hearing aid screening and a medicinal marijuana seminar. We had so much fun learning about the healing powers of medical marijuana, not to mention receiving a free hearing screening. Henderson-Sachs, Attorneys at Law, also hosted a lunch and learn in May.

Welcome the Red Hatters - We now have a Red Hat Society meeting monthly at the Masters. Don your red hat and check it out.

Hometown America celebrated Memorial Day with a cook out for all residents on Saturday, May 25 at the Westchester pool. Fred and Sheryl Nero were our DJs for the day. We hope you had a great time with all the games and tasty food. Thank you, Hometown!

To wind down the show season, Hometown America brought back Kip Sweeney and his Sunshine Band show on April 26. The Masters clubhouse was full and rocked the house. His “Night Moves” show featured songs from the 60s through the present. The response to his return has been phenomenal.

Tips for Mature Dating

Your interests, hobbies, preferences, and tastes are much different now than when you were younger. The same is true in dating. How recently have you brushed up on your first date etiquette? Getting back in the game can be scary, but we’ve got you covered. Check out some of these tips from AARP to help set you up for smooth sailing on your next date.

• • Respond proportionally. Texting is a real communications tool in today’s dating world. Don’t be too long-winded in your responses, but don’t rely on your partner to carry the conversation either. It should be a give and take of information about yourselves.
• • Be original. No one wants to hear the same generic compliment or question over and over. Stand out from their other dates by using your imagination to keep them engaged the entire time.
• • Come prepared. If you’re worried about how to keep the conversation going, show up to the date with about four questions and five stories in mind that you can throw in the mix whenever there is a lull in the conversation.
• • Avoid talking too much about past relationships. This date is a fresh start for you both. Dwelling on the past right away could make it harder for them to see a future with you. Keep the conversations about past relationships for a topic to discuss down the line.
• • Have fun! This is, perhaps, the most important tip. Dating at any age can be scary, but if you go in with an open mind and heart, there is nothing to fear. Take on the new opportunity with joy!

Outsmarting Scammers

In April 2018, Medicare and Medicaid began rolling out new cards to help members avoid scammers. As of January 2019, all members should have their new card. Rather than including a social security number, these cards feature a unique to protect members’ identities.

But scammers aren’t giving up so easily, and summer months seem like primetime for their schemes.

Some scammers are calling members, impersonating Medicare employees. They may ask for your personal information, claiming to verify it for your new card. On the other hand, some scammers call to pretend someone has already tried to use your new card and they need your personal information to confirm it is you. Another scam involves criminals calling asking for a fee for the new card or you bank account information so you get your refund.

We’ve compiled tips to help you spot the fakes with ease:

• Know the warning signs. Real Medicare employees will never call you without invitation, so if the call is unexpected it is probably a fake. If they threaten to cancel your coverage for not providing personal information over the phone, this is a signal the call is fake.
• Hang up immediately. If your experience matches the warning signs or otherwise seems fake, hang up immediately before the scammer can continue.
• Destroy your old card. This still has your Social Security number on it, and you don’t want to take the chance of it falling into the wrong hands.
• Don’t share your new number. The only people who need your Medicare number are you and your trusted provider. If someone calls you unexpectedly asking for your new number, do not give it to them.
• Contact Medicare. If you believe you were contacted by a scammer, learn how to protect yourself here and contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
