Hello everyone -

I want to take a moment to wish all of our residents happiness and health in the new year. I hope 2018 is already bringing your lives joy, fellowship, and love.

Looking ahead, I’ve highlighted some exciting upcoming events. We hope you join us!

• Hometown Golf Invitational- February 9
  Hometown would like to say thank you in the form of a fun-filled day of golf. The annual tournament is scheduled for Friday, February 9 with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. See our newsletter article for more details.
• Fleetwood Mac Cover Band- February 15
  Spend the evening dancing and reminiscing about those glory days with the music of Fleetwood Mac. We’ve been promoting it for months, and our article has more details in case you need them. Don’t miss out on this mega musical event!

Hometown Golf Tournament

Activities Corner

The holiday season has come and gone again. We are happy to be well into the swing of 2018.

• Our Resident Christmas Party was a great time! We played Dirty Santa and enjoyed delicious food from Papa Gio’s. See below for a slide show from the event.
• In January, a group of us traveled to St. Augustine and saw the Nights of Lights attraction. I highly recommend seeing it by trolley tour. It was wonderful!
• There are great events coming up in February, including a movie night on Friday, February 23. We also hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day with your loved ones!
• March is busy as always. Save the date for movie night on March 22, get ready for our annual Health Fair on March 24, and be on the lookout for our next tribute band concert. More details coming soon!

Go Volunteer!

Volunteering your time to a good cause provides countless rewards. It’s your chance to make the world a better place, even if only a little bit. So, what’s your hidden talent? How can you help others this month?

• • The Arts- Volunteers are always needed to help at art galleries, theatres, and concert halls. You can work as an usher or stagehand, help with costuming, or welcome patrons in the ticket office. Some organizations also need photographers or artists as creative help. Don’t miss an opportunity to let your artistic side run wild.
• • Hospitals- Most hospitals rely on the kindness of volunteer staff to keep things running smoothly. You can help do paperwork, run gift shops, and cheer up sick patients. Some hospitals even need volunteers to help in the NICU and rock babies to sleep! Not only is this a great way to help people in need, but it also provides a satisfaction like no other.
• • Animals- Animal shelters are always in need of someone to lend a hand. Other animal-based volunteer opportunities include pet sitting or dog walking. If you have a way with pets, there are plenty who need the love and attention of a caring person.
• • Trade Skills- Quality services such as carpentry, electrical work, and other contracting skills are hard to find. If you have these trade skills, seek out nonprofits that build homes or help folks in financial trouble. You can also contribute wherever our own community may need some sprucing up. Handy-man skills are hard to come by and in high-demand, so let people know you are willing and ready to help.
• • Outdoors- Opportunities in the great outdoors are plentiful. Many parks and recreational facilities use volunteer help for routine maintenance, for class instruction, as nature walks guides, and at information desks. If you love the outdoors, volunteering at your local park may be the activity for you.

Drive Safe and Smart

AAA reports that almost 90 percent of seniors fail to make adjustments to their vehicles than improve safety while driving. The national auto club group looked at 12 vehicle modifications they believe keep seniors safer on roads, and found that fewer than nine percent of drivers reported using any of the devices in their vehicles.

According to the study, working with a trained technician is imperative to safety behind the wheel. Almost 90 percent of those studied reported that they did not work with a trained professional to install the modification, a key recommendation by both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Take advantage of these low-cost changes and vehicle features to help reach your next destination safely. (And remember to work with a professional to make the modifications!)

• • Add steering wheel covers- This simple item can improve your grip of the wheel, especially if you have arthritis
• • Install convex or multifaceted mirrors- It’s a crucial addition than can minimize blind spots and increase visibility
• • Insert pedal extensions- These extensions to both gas and break pedals allow drivers to remain a safe distance from detonating airbags.
• • Purchase seat pads and cushions- Who doesn’t want to alleviates hip and back pain?
• • Install hand controls- This type of adaptive equipment allows drivers to regain independence and to be in control of their own transportation without using lower extremities.
