Pride of Pine Lakes

This month’s highlight is the stunning front yard of Carol Grady on Westgate. Carol has lived in Pine Lakes since 2004 and clearly takes pride to a whole new level with her beautiful front yard. From the rock-lined footpath meandering toward the front door to the flowerpots bursting with foliage and color, this yard is breathtaking. We wouldn’t be able to complete this review without mentioning the adorable birdhouse that adds a whimsical charm to the entire space. Thank you, Carol, for creating such a lovely garden that everyone driving down the street can admire and enjoy.

In 1956, Elvis Presley had his first No. 1 single, “Heartbreak Hotel”, his first No. 1 self-titled album, and his first movie, Love Me Tender, was a hit. However, things quickly changed when he was drafted the following year. By March 1958, Presley was inducted into the Army, serving in Friedburg, Germany, for 18 months. It was there that he met Priscilla Beaulieu, who he later married in Las Vegas.

In an interview with the Armed Forces Radio and television, he commented “I was in a funny position actually, that's the only way it could be. People were expecting me to mess up, to goof up in one way or another. They thought I couldn't take it and so forth, and I was determined to go to any limits to prove otherwise, not only to the people who were wondering, but to myself.” Presley, who died in 1977, ended up working his way up to sergeant, noting, “The Army teaches boys to think like men”.

Block Blue Light

Blue light glasses

We spend a lot of time staring at screens. From the minutes we spend clearing notifications on our phone to the hours we spend searching the web, screens are a part of our daily life. But these screens emit blue light, which is harmful to the eyes and can strain them when looking at screens for long periods.

Not all blue light is bad, but there are measures we can take to prevent the problems that arise with too much of it. Blue light glasses are increasing in popularity as spending time online becomes more and more prominent in our daily lives. These glasses have benefits such as improving sleep and increasing work performance. Recent studies concluded that the glasses prevent suppression of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. Because screens emit light, they can affect the amount of melatonin that your brain is producing as the brain is tricked into thinking it’s daytime. Blue light glasses block that and allow you to sleep restfully, even after a period of screen usage.

The glasses can also improve your work performance, as they bring comfort to the wearer about the potential damage the screen could do to your eyes. There are many advantages to trying out the glasses, and they are readily available to try! Stores like Target may sell them for as little as $10, and quality brands such as Warby Parker allow you to add their blue-light-filtering lenses to any frame.

Consider investing in a pair of blue light glasses and use your tech safely!

Discover a Hidden Talent

Close up of hands shuffling cards

It’s said that we only use 10% of our brains on a daily basis. Unlock more of your brainpower by cultivating a hidden talent! There are many ways to find a new area of interest for you to explore. First, think about all the things that make you happy. If you love to travel, maybe learning a new language is a hidden talent for you to pursue. Another tactic is to examine the activities that you’re already good at. Perhaps if winning board games is a strong suit of yours, you can become a chess expert with those same skills!

A hidden talent can be anything. You are a unique person, and you know yourself best. Think about what you’d like to achieve and set out to do it. With practice, any passion can become a talent. Expertise comes with time and attention, and putting your mind to a task can help engage your brain in new and exciting ways. Remember not to give up!

There are many examples of hidden talents for you to try your hands at. Cooking, drawing, and learning an instrument may come to mind first, but there are so many more that you’ve probably never even thought about as a talent. Public speaking, speed reading, and creativity can all be talents, too. The most important thing is that your talent is a reflection of you. Try new things and see what you take a liking to. No matter what skill you possess, it’s sure to help you grow.
